Stannington-based musician and music teacher Rob Straw is starting 2010 in upbeat mood.
“I now have new places available for youngsters or adults wanting to learn a brass instrument and am looking forward to a busy year on the performing front,” said Rob today as NWS News Blog interviewed him at his tuition studio.
Over the years, Rob’s teaching work has paid dividends for many players, young and old from all over the region, now enjoying their own success in various musical groups and brass bands.
His CV is certainly impressive: Currently Resident Conductor at Barnsley Building Society Brass Band, he led the outfit to 5th place last October at the national Pontins brass competition – competing in a field of 25 bands from across the UK. Rob has also played Principal Cornet with Strata Brass and Stannington Brass Band in the past, and he regularly helps out (“deps”) some of the biggest banding names in the prestigious Yorkshire region.
Rob is also in great demand as a session man, playing keyboard and brass for jazz and blues bands on studio recordings as well as live on stage. Over the past few years, he has particularly been a mainstay of the excellent Eloise Short Quartette.
