The Met Office predicts the big freeze may last up to two further weeks at least.
Temperatures tonight and tomorrow evening will likely dip to -9°C and barely reach freezing point during daytime.
A Met official said today:
“We normally forecast for a week in advance and this is going to last as long as that, probably another week on top. Temperatures will remain low and there will be a few snow showers at times too. It may get milder at times, but temperatures will just creep up to more closer to average for this time of year. This is a severe cold spell.”
No fresh falls of snow are yet forecast, but ice will remain a hazard.
